The episode begins with Pipp Petals getting ready for Royal Portrait Day, a picture day for the royal family of Zephyr Heights, but her sister Zipp Storm is more preoccupied with deciphering the meaning of Princess Twilight Sparkle's foreboding message from the previous episode. The evil Opaline spies on Pipp's livestream and overhears the sisters' conversation. Bitter that Twilight is still interfering with her plans, Opaline tasks Misty with luring Pipp and Zipp into a trap and getting them out of the way.
Taking notice of a particular flower—an ocean lily—in one of Pipp and Zipp's past family portraits, Opaline gives Misty a magical facsimile of the flower with which to lure the sister princesses away, while warning her to be extra careful of Zipp and her more curious nature.
At the Mane Melody beauty salon, Pipp, Zipp, and Sunny Starscout await the arrival of Pipp and Zipp's mother Queen Haven for an afternoon of pre-portrait beauty treatments, but Zipp wants to focus on Twilight Sparkle's warning. When Queen Haven arrives, Zipp desperately wants to get out of the ensuing spa treatments. She receives an email from an unknown source with a picture of an Ocean Lily, and she convinces Pipp to look for one with her as a pretext to ditch Portrait Day and go investigating.
The pictures of the Ocean Lily sent to Zipp's phone lead her and Pipp to the Maretime Bay beach. Zipp attempts to look for clues, but Pipp gets distracted interacting with her fans. Back at Mane Melody, Sunny shares with Queen Haven her plans to build a community garden for Earth ponies to practice their magic and foster teamwork.
When Haven notices Pipp and Zipp's absence and wants to go looking for them, Sunny keeps her busy with the appeal of singing a song, and Haven eagerly obliges with her song Pony Love. Meanwhile, on the beach, Zipp worries Pipp's selfies will expose their secret investigation to their mother, but Pipp insists she turned off her phone's location-tracking features.
The two's constant arguing finally reaches a tipping point, and Zipp admits she does not care about Portrait Day or Pipp's social media posts, hurting her feelings. The embittered sisters follow a trail of Ocean Lily petals to a cave where the flower is in full bloom, but they are too mad at each other to appreciate the discovery. As they continue to argue, a sudden earthquake and cave-in, triggered by Misty, traps them inside the cave.
Unable to keep Queen Haven distracted for much longer, Sunny covers for Pipp and Zipp and tells Haven that they went ahead to Zephyr Heights for Portrait Day. This leads to a brief conversation about how Pipp and Zipp got along when they were younger, with Haven lamenting that they do not get along now as much as they used to.
Back in the collapsed cave, Zipp and Pipp struggle to break out or call for help, all while blaming each other for their current predicament. Calming down, Zipp apologizes for bringing Pipp along on this adventure under false pretenses and admits she genuinely wanted to have some fun with her like they used to. She starts singing Portrait Day, a song from their childhood; Pipp joins in, and by the end of the song, the two have made amends.
Working together, they find a small opening in the cave ceiling through which Pipp is able to get a signal on her phone and call for help. They are soon found and rescued by some of Pipp's fans, much to Misty's frustration. Pipp and Zipp race to meet with Queen Haven at the Zephyr Heights palace throne room, and though they are messy and covered in seaweed, the portrait taken of them is all smiles. Misty reports the failure of her mission to Opaline, and Opaline decides to take matters into her own hands, her mirror reflection taking on the appearance of Sunny Starscout.
