Picking up where the previous episode left off, the Mane 5 are searching for the missing Misty inside the Breezies' Night Market but cannot find her anywhere. Unbeknownst to them, Misty has made her way out of the Night Market and into the foggy forest outside Bridlewood. Realizing this is the same situation as in her recurring dream, Misty searches for the door she saw. Misty runs into a lone Breezie in the forest; while the Breezie is unable to help Misty find the door she is looking for, it does help her find her way back to the Night Market.
While searching for Misty, the Mane 5 pass a market stand selling several artifacts, including a fossilized dragon footprint. The sight of the footprint catches Sparky's attention, and he gets the exciting thing he has been since Opaline drained his dragonfire. The ponies believe the best way to fully restore Sparky's strength is to reunite him with the rest of his kind, but Hitch realizes he may soon say goodbye to Sparky.
With the help of the Breezie she met in the forest, Misty gets back to the Night Market and reunites with her friends. Zipp, having been pressuring Misty about her recurring dreams up until now, makes clear how relieved she is that Misty is okay. Misty shows her friends the key she was given in the previous episode; she believes whatever it unlocks will have the answers she seeks about her past and family.
To that end, the six ponies ask around the Night Market for information about the key as well as the possible whereabouts of the dragons. During their search, Hitch and Misty sing the song Mane Family. The ponies' search does not yield much results, but they tell Misty that, even if she never finds out about her past, they consider her a part of their family.
Zipp, however, succeeds in locating the door from Misty's dream after clearing away some of the Wishing Tree's overgrowth. Misty considers using the key to find her family, but remembering that the key can only be used once, she instead decides to use it to find the dragons for Sparky. She uses the key to unlock the door, and a magic portal opens. Sparky runs through the portal, and the Mane 6 follow after.
On the other side of the portal, the Mane 6 and Sparky are transported to the Dragon Lands and Sparky instantly feels more energetic than before. The group discovers footprints and dragon artifacts, but there are no signs of the dragons themselves; the ponies theorize they fled their home to escape from Opaline. With no one to leave Sparky in the care of, Hitch decides to keep looking after him until the dragons are found.
The ponies use the portal to return to Bridlewood, and the Breezies close the Night Market for the evening. Though Misty has not found any answers about her past, she is glad to have helped Sparky. However, when Pipp shows Misty some recent photos she took with Zipp, Queen Haven and Alphabittle, Misty recognizes Alphabittle in the photos and has another memory flash. She realizes that the large, shadowy figure in her dreams was a younger-looking Alphabittle calling out to his missing daughter.
At the Crystal Tea Room, Alphabittle shares with Queen Haven the reason why he feels the need to stay in Bridlewood. He shows Haven a picture of a young Misty – his daughter – and explains that she went missing many years before. After many failed attempts to find her, Alphabittle has stayed close to Bridlewood just in case she miraculously returns home.
Just then, Alphabittle's cutie mark starts glowing again, as it has been doing for the past several hours, and Misty enters, her cutie mark also glowing. Once the initial shock wears off, father and daughter tearfully reunite after years spent apart, and the Mane 5, Sparky and Queen Haven watch them embrace.
The next morning, Alphabittle and Misty are very excited to catch up on lost time, and Sparky is back to his old, rambunctious, fire-breathing self. The episode ends with the ponies, except the royal pegasus family, celebrating and making a toast to family with some of Alphabittle's tea.
