Alicorns are a type of Pony, the rarest of all. Some ponies are born Alicorns, but a regular pony can earn the honor and privilege of becoming an Alicorn by doing a great deed(s) that benefits ponykind and promotes harmony and friendship between all.

Alicorns have both wings and a horn, with the same abilities as Earth Ponies, Pegasus Ponies and Unicorns.
Pre-G5[]
Alicorns were not used until Generation 4, but in My Little Pony:Escape From Catrina during the lullaby baby pegasus by name baby Surprise became an alicorn. The reason for this was an animation error. In My Little Pony Tales in episode Up, Up And Away was one Alicorn named Dazzleglow. Dazzleglow was a unicorn in the Glow 'n Show Ponies toy set but was seen with wings in the episode. In this generation, there are only a few different Alicorn characters, but many Alicorn toys as the same characters were re-released. This stands for Generation 4.5 as well.
