Canterlot was the former capital of Equestria, serving as such until some point between the end of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, and My Little Pony: A New Generation. Sunny Starscout, Hitch Trailblazer, Izzy Moonbow, Pipp Petals and Zipp Storm are seen visiting the city's ruins on Cover A of Issue 2 of the comic series.

Many years ago Canterlot was ruled by Princess Twilight Sparkle. At some point during her reign, she built the Gate of the Ancients at the entrance to Canterlot to represent the friendship of all ponies in Equestria who came to visit. For unknown reasons, Canterlot was abandoned and largely forgotten. It remained for ages in the overgrown forest among the isolated mountains. Legends of its prominence continued throughout Equestria. Canterlot was eventually rediscovered accidentally by Izzy Moonbow while on an expedition with her friends to investigate one of the missing Unity Crystals. She and the Mane 5 explored the ruined city and marveled at its history. However, Sunny Starscout was concerned that Canterlot's fall signaled that the falter of friendships was inevitable.

The Mane 5 eventually entered the Royal Castle. They found the Throne Room to be in remarkably good condition, as if its royal court had left only a short time ago. It was then the group fell through a series of trap doors into the cavern beneath the Castle. There they were greeted by the aged Discord, self proclaimed lord of chaos. He provided an abridged and questionable testimony of what had happened to Canterlot and the Ancient Equestria, alluding to a possible battle and subsequent collapse of friendship which he blamed on the presence of magic. He then revealed that he was the culprit in the theft of the Pegasi Crystal and vowed to find a way to destroy it in a misguided effort to prevent magic from causing war between Ponies ever again. He then left the Ponies in the cavern to fulfill his scheme.
